A new rug for a room can be a tough decision. First, they are expensive, so it automatically becomes a non-impulse buy. Second, they can completely change the mood and feeling of a room. Rugs can take a room from formal to relaxed in no-time flat. Changing out your rug can be one of the easiest ways to make a major update in a room without major work.
I'll be honest with you, our living room doesn't look like this exactly anymore. We shot it earlier this year for a magazine feature and have to keep it on lock down until that comes out. A blogger's life is weird. But, it's pretty darn close and this gives you a shot of our current rug. We've owned it for probably 8+ years and it's worked in many spaces for us. It's bold, it has personality, and it's easily cleaned--all good things. On the negative, it feels outdated to me and I'm ready for a change.
So what does the space need? I am teetering back and forth between a different black and white pattern, a neutral more subtle piece, and a bright, bold pop of color. Let's take a look at what I've pulled as options so far, shall we?
Makes the space a little more casual with the "plushness" of the rug but still offers a nice bold pattern. RugsUSA 9 x 12' $564
Very similar situation to what we have now. I like the pattern and the boldness but worry I will feel it's not much of a change. RugsUSA 9x12' $357
More black and white. More pattern. I just have always loved houndstooth. RugUSA 8 x 11' $760
Feels neutral while still offering a pattern. Visually, it may read as too gray though due to the tight pattern from far away or in photographs. RugUSA 9 x 12' $366
Did I go too far out with this one? I picked the last one for a neutral option and then rebelled by going crazy with all of the colors. This might not be the rug but might prove a larger point that I need/want something graphic there. RugsUSA 9 x 12' $315
Is this my happy medium? A color but a more subtle pattern offered here. The navy could look beautiful pulling the blues from the Kristi Kohut artwork and the sofas. RugsUSA 9 x 12' $243 (and it's a heck of a deal).
There they all are one last time together. Sometimes it helps to do a side by side comparison.
So now I'm turning it to all of you. What do you think? Is neutral the way to go here? Am I black and white obsessed and I need to learn to embrace color? Talk to me, help me here.
