Chasing Away The Winter Blues

I don't know about you, but my winter blues get pretty heavy this time of year.

With the holidays past us it seems like all we have to look forward to is spring, but this year I am working very intentionally to make the most of every season. I did a little research as to how to chase those blues away and, because I love you guys, I am sharing with you what I found.

Fill your space with inspiration and beauty

First things first: your space. In the winter months we tend to spend more time inside and at home which makes the way your home looks very important. If you come home and it feels like either someone else’s space or lacking in inspiration or you-ness there is no way it will bring you life when the world outside is cold. Put up a new wallpaper, accent your current furniture with new pillows or throws, add art or reframe that gorgeous piece that could use a little face lift, dig out that antique clock you inherited - whatever makes the space feel more like a reflection of you. To browse through our available art for your space take a look here and always feel free to reach out with any questions.

Lighting Matters

Most of the time this season we will be in the dark. Whether that be because we work in an office and get there when the sun is about to rise and leave right when it is setting or because the sky is a little moody it is so important to have lighting that makes you feel cozy and safe. Pull out all your candles and put warm colored bulbs in your lamps to give your space more of a cozy winter feel than a cold and harsh winter. Even when the sun is out the light is cool and blue. Also, I will let you in on a little secret: Liz is working on a lighting guide that will be a helpful tool for learning how to light your art beautifully and correctly. This should be available for purchase early this year.

Spend time outside (and with loved ones)

I know this sounds counterproductive, but it is helpful to get fresh air and move a little bit. Get all bundled up with your loved ones, grab a hot tea or cocoa and go for a little walk. Tell them all the things you are thankful for from 2021 and all the things you are looking forward to in 2022. Whatever you do, don’t complain about the cold. When we complain we wire our brains to be cranky about whatever we are doing. That doesn’t mean you will instantly love being cold and shivery, but it will at least remove your mind from it. This all being said, that might not be super possible with large amounts of snow. If you are unable to get out of the house our artist Rachel Walter has stunning skyscapes to bring you a little breath of fresh air. No matter how you are getting outside, make sure you are spending quality time with loved ones taking about things you are grateful for.

Journal

Allowing yourself to reflect is so important when you are not feeling emotionally your best. I wont spend too much time on this because journaling can look however you want it to - sketch journaling, sketch booking, writing, poetry and the list goes on and on. But, while I am on the subject, EttaVee has a beautiful line of journals with Lauren Conrad and we also have a local small business called moglea that makes beautiful, hand painted, journals and stationary that might inspire you to journal however you see fit.

Self Care/Taking the time you need

Make sure you are getting enough (but not too much) sleep, drinking enough water and taking things slow. This time of year can feel overwhelming and exhausting, but if you allow yourself to spend time taking care of yourself it will be a much easier pill to swallow. Take the time to read books to yourself or the little ones in your life, take time to listen to your favorite music, take the time to give yourself a little back rub or a back rub to someone you love.
I hope some of these tips allow you to feel refreshed and a little less overwhelmed by the cold and darkness of the winter.
