Meet our September Iowa Artist of the Month, Suzanna de Baca! Based in Huxley, Iowa, Suzanna is a multimedia visual artist, writer, poet, business advisor, and educator whose creative practice explores change, transformation, identity, and the stories that shape us. An Art and Design graduate of Iowa State University, Suzanna returned to her visual art practice after a career spanning business, media, and nonprofit leadership. Today, her paintings, drawings, and sculptures explore the Iowa landscape through layers of color, texture, and symbolism. In her latest body of work, Suzanna turns her attention to the prairie—capturing expansive skies, horizons, and the land while exploring the history, memory, and meaning held within it. We’re so excited to celebrate Suzanna and share her work with you throughout the month of September!

The Iowa Artist feature of the month is Bill Luchsinger and Karen Strohbeen, partners who have been working alongside each other since 1970. For more than five decades, they’ve been pioneers of digital printmaking, creating work that blends photography, technology, and inspiration from the natural world. Working from their 80-acre farm near Macksburg, Iowa, their gardens have become an endless source of creativity, inspiring sculptures, photographs, and prints collected around the world. Their decades-long artistic partnership has made them two of Iowa’s most accomplished contemporary artists. A day behind the scenes with @hannah.jacobus Here’s a glimpse into a day spent sourcing, styling, and shooting. From pulling inspiration and selecting artwork to styling shelves and refining the details, every detail is curated to create a space that feels personal and timeless. Design tip: Scale is key. When styling shelves, you’ll always need more colorful books than you think—they add height and personality! 📚

Art drama is the best kind of drama. And we love a statement piece that really makes you feel something. So what is it about a piece that makes it demand your attention? Here are a few works around the gallery that help show you why. First, high contrast. Really dark spots and really light spots. The contrast immediately catches the viewer’s attention because there’s rarely this much contrast in everyday life. Next, a color-drenched moment. One color in different variations—especially when it’s a bold, vibrant shade. This @anna__michele__ string-wrapped panel is the perfect example. And red is the epitome of drama. Visual symmetry, especially at a large scale. At first glance, it may not feel symmetrical. But the longer you look, the more you see how each corner mirrors the opposite. The negative space, the composition, the overall “plan”—it’s intentionally symmetrical and brilliant. Overall dark colors and often monochromatic. Rich, dark, textured strokes automatically feel moody and stir something in your soul. An unexpected scale. There may be a recognizable subject, but when it’s extra large? It makes you do a double take. Like this fabulous face by @suzy.lindow—you see faces every day, but never at this scale. A thoughtful nature element. We all know a flower blooms and wilts, and when paired with dark colors (instead of the bright colors we often associate with flowers), it somehow feels even more thoughtful and emotional. An intentionally “busy” composition. With the right colors and placement, a maximalist piece can be the true drama queen of the room. And on the flip side—an understated minimalist piece. It knows it’s the perfect amount of drama all on its own. It’s chic and not overdone (exactly how a real drama queen feels).

I love everything about this collection. The color combos, the painted confetti, the polka dots—it’s all so happy. And I’m excited to share it. Touching Grass Is Not Enough (the cutest title!) is now live, with ten new pieces by the wonderful @bekahworleyco. Okay, and if you had to choose—which one is your favorite?

These creamy clouds from @tessabrownart JUST arrived at the gallery and the rolling strokes at this scale are so, so good. 🤎 The coloring is rich, dramatic and truly makes you feel something. The grand presence that a large canvas gives really can’t be beat. Oh, and here’s our new team member for scale. Hi and welcome, Kendal!

In the art world, it’s a big deal for an artist to secure a solo show—it’s an opportunity to tell their story and fully express themselves through a cohesive body of work. This collection by @the.allisonjames tells her ever-evolving story of motherhood, confidence and transformation. The paintings are a kind of self-portrait, inviting viewers to find something of themselves within the work.

Now live, @the.allisonjames solo show at the gallery, Origin Story! Created between November 2025 and June 2026, this body of work traces a season of profound transformation. What began as an exploration of motherhood took on new meaning when Allison discovered she was expecting her second child midway through the series. Through luminous, unruly florals and an evolving visual language, these paintings capture the uncertainty, wonder and quiet joy of becoming. Deeply personal yet universally resonant, the work invites viewers to reflect on change, growth and the many ways we are continually reshaped.

It was fun to share the very first piece ever sold at the gallery in yesterday’s post by @angelachrusciakiblehm! So I’m rolling with it—want to know the second piece after opening our doors? It was a @kevin.brent.morris beetle! Based in Kansas City, Kevin’s work has evolved and become even more refined over the years, and we’re grateful to still represent him. We love the combination of patterned backgrounds and meticulously detailed subjects. There’s still a handful of crawly friends at the gallery, each one paired with a uniquely vintage, sourced frame. Titled On Pink, swipe to the end to see the exact piece that became the second work we ever sold at the gallery in 2019. 🪲

Simply put, pop art is all about bold color, big humor and no pretense—often transforming everyday objects into art. And I love @angelachrusciakiblehm’s take on it. She’s turned the familiar into an iconic collection that everyone recognizes as uniquely hers: lips, legs, shoes, ribbons and more. She’s inspired by fashion, the routines of everyday life and the comic side of sensuality. We’re thrilled to carry her work and support a longtime friend. Elsie is a big reader, and as a creative through and through, it feels so fitting that she combines both passions into one. The installation features perfectly paired paintings that trace @the.allisonjames’ journey through the emotional transformation of motherhood, using evolving floral forms as self-portraits. It’s always fun to share a peek at what’s happening behind the scenes in the design world. ✨ Our Director of Design, Hannah, has been especially busy with construction site visits as projects continue to take shape—which also happens to be one of her favorite parts. Here are a few highlights from the month’s recap! Checking in on tile installation progress for a bathroom renovation and loving this pattern from @thetileshop. Meeting with a client to refine the home’s overall scheme and color story, with material pulls from @schumacher1889, @theloomandco and @cowtanandtout. A stunning blue paint color (Hannah’s current favorite!) from @benjaminmoore beautifully paired with neutral, textural grasscloth for this cabinetry installation. Reviewing painted millwork alongside a @schumacher1889 wallpaper sample to ensure every detail works together. Visiting @midwesttiledesmoines to select the perfect stone slab for custom countertops. Pairing a @phillipjeffriesltd grasscloth sample with painted trim for a timeless, layered look. Envisioning and planning custom cabinetry and millwork for a client. This future view will feature a beautifully detailed traditional staircase, a custom runner and artwork throughout—and we can’t wait to see it come to life.

Kristen keeps telling us that she said goodbye to her favorite painting when she shipped it off to the gallery. And @kristen.abbott.art, we’re lucky to have it! Shared more in today’s stories, this piece is full of incredible color and texture—and it has the most perfect title: The Scent of the Sun at the Lake. Lake season is upon us. ☀️🌊 We’re so excited to see where she finds a home. After living with it for just a few days here, the team keeps coming back to how special it is.

Introducing something new we’re up to! The gallery’s Youth Mentored Artist Program is a six-month mentorship with @lizlidgett designed to introduce young artists to the creative, practical and professional aspects of life as a working artist. Inspired by the mentors and arts education that shaped her own journey, Liz created the program to pay forward the opportunities she received, with gallery proceeds from artwork sales benefiting the @desmoinesartcenter youth arts education program. First up: youth artist Teddy Petersik, age 12, from Northwest Florida, a self-taught textile artist. Learn more about the program and view his work on the website!

The list goes on, but here’s our top three. Don’t be afraid to go BIG. 💫 It’s easy to fuss over all the small placements—shelves, tabletops, buffets—but one large piece of art can simplify the decision-making with one big visual statement. Think about buying four smaller pieces to fill the same wall space. If each one costs $1,000, multiply that by four and your total is $4,000. At that price point, you’ll have plenty of large-scale artwork to choose from at the gallery. In fact, many larger pieces start around $2,500, making it easier than you might think to go big. With today’s rain, it feels only right to spotlight @daisyfaithart’s Orange Crush—her 20 x 20” anniversary show piece, with those bright yellow wellies front and center. ☔️🌧️ The inspiration image is almost like a map, helping you spot every hidden element throughout the painting. Daisy often works with blues and greens, so I love seeing this warmer palette. Lots of orange, yellow and pink—it’s bright and cheerful on this gloomy day.

Growing up making art with her mother and grandmother, @elsielarson draws from folk art traditions in her work. Her signature heavy textures give dimension and movement, with moths emerging as recurring icons—one of her personal muses. Her collection is a fan favorite, and clients are drawn to her muted palettes. 🍄‍🟫🌿

After a few days of sharing more neutral-focused work, we’re bringing bright, vibrant color back to the feed! Eight new pieces by @alexandra.ackerman have arrived at the gallery and we love her mixed-media collages. She combines paper, fabric, and paint to create beautifully layered works. P.S. Dawn, dusk, flower fields and everything in between, @meghanbustard’s newest collection is inspired by nature’s colorful spectrum, with rosy pinks and earthy browns woven throughout. 🌙🌾🌺 What makes these pieces even more special? Each one is constructed with sewn canvas, where every shift in color is separated by a stitched line that adds texture, contrast and visual depth. Ten new pieces are now live on the website, with prices starting at $500!

The human form—exploring negative space, movement and tension. 💫 I love how @elbowgreasedesign blends abstraction and representation in a way that feels energetic and passionate. I can picture these works thoughtfully placed in a bedroom or bathroom—there’s something timeless about a nude in a luxurious space. Elbowgrease is the artistic moniker of Lauren Skunta, a formally trained Ohio-based painter whose practice spans multiple mediums. Named for the labor and craftsmanship behind her work, Elbowgrease reflects a hands-on approach, often incorporating found natural pigments. Her latest figure paintings emerge from life as a mother of two, where time feels both precious and fleeting. Five linen canvases are now available at the gallery! Hung together, they create a lovely grid—but each one is equally powerful as a solo moment.

Getting a peek into Joy Kinna’s studio, you quickly see her creative process is a sensory and emotional journey. From the feel of materials in her hands to the quiet pause before each mark, creating is both meditative and intuitive. Her work weaves together memory, emotion and landscape in a fluid dialogue of color and form—a continual push and pull between instinct and intention. @joykinna believes art has the power to transform a space, creating moments of stillness, reflection and connection. Each of these pieces feels deeply inspired by nature’s textures, patterns and colors. There’s something so grounding and beautiful about the way they echo the natural world. 🤎🌿

Introducing June’s Iowa artist, Ben Millett! Just installed yesterday, Ben is a quilt artist whose work explores Queer identity, pop culture and the craft of quiltmaking through bold, personal color palettes. Transforming digital ideas into fabric and thread, he creates to play, communicate and make the work he wants to see. His quilts were recently featured at the @desmoinesartcenter and we are thrilled to now showcase his work at the gallery. May’s recap—is it cliché to say there was a lot going on? But, whew, it was a big one. Including the celebration of our seven-year anniversary! Here’s the highlights: ▪️The team cheered on @lizlidgett at the @desmoinesartcenter Artful Delights dinner, where she hosted the evening. ▪️We introduced three new artists! Figures by @elbowgreasedesign, botanicals by @tonyacruzdesign and floral by @annapropstart. We’re excited to share more from them soon. ▪️To celebrate our 7-year anniversary, Seven brought together one piece from every artist we represent. We were thrilled to see 27 works find homes on opening day! ▪️Lily painted a mural in the back hallway because it simply needed more color. Why not? ▪️Liz completed her book tour (with Art For Everyone becoming an @amazonbooks best seller!)—South Carolina, Texas and Florida. Thank you to the lovely hosts @sipland.co, @scoutdesignstudio and @lisagilmoredesign (@book_and_bottle). And how special to see @karinolah and @emily_furr in person! ▪️We staged a client install with a @gina_julian grid—it was so good. Love seeing all these together. ▪️Furniture and art were installed for a design client—the office is full of mood and rich color, including a special commissioned piece by @kevin.brent.morris! ▪️We paid 48 artists in the month of May (red dots mark sold)! So proud of this number. Each one is a small business of their own—and it’s a joy to champion their work.

The comment we hear most when someone sees these pieces? “I hate snakes, but I love these.” And oh, we get it. Somehow both a little eerie and absolutely stunning, these @paige.barnes.dorsey snakes stop people in their tracks every time they visit the gallery. Crafted from a mix of materials—pearls, diamonds, metal, amethyst and more—each one has its own personality and we love the chance to show them off. Designed to hang on the wall, they create that perfect snake-slithering-where-it-shouldn’t-be feeling that’s equal parts unsettling and beautiful. The kind of artwork that starts conversations and keeps people looking. And they’re even 10x better in person.

Cowboys—but make it pink. 🌵🌸 This collection from @kevin.brent.morris that dropped today is rustic perfection—from the textured paint and deckled paper edges to the raw wood frames. Tough, timeless cowboys but not too tough to be pink, ya know? See the full collection now on the website!

Yesterday we introduced Anna Propst, and today we’re excited to welcome Lauren Skunta to the gallery. Working across painting and mixed media, she often uses found natural pigments in her practice. Her newest series returns to figural painting, capturing fleeting moments of new motherhood with tenderness and immediacy. We’re thrilled to bring more figural work into the gallery.
