Lighting For Your Home Gallery
Lighting is one of the most overlooked items in decor. I recently saw Julia from Chris Loves Julia on instagram say “You may think you have enough lighting in your living room but you don’t.” I add on to this, you may think your art is properly lit but it probably isn’t.
There are a few fast tips and products that I love to give to clients when I am talking about lighting.
First things first, how do you light your artwork?
A smooth, even wash of light is best instead of spotlighting the artwork. If you do have spotlights, use two to three so that their lightstreams can cross and evenly light the work.
Try to have the beam of light hit at a 30 degree angle. This angle will help both light the art and minimize shadows. If you have a light too close to the work and the light is casting straight down, then there will be long shadows that accompany the piece.
Natural light and artwork do not mix well. Direct sunlight can fade artwork, especially works on paper, so if possible, keep them out of the sun. UV and infrared light will also fade artwork so stick with LED lights because they emit less heat and limit the ultraviolet light.
Recently, I decorated our back entry. It works hard for our family as it holds all of our go-to items and has become the perfect spot for our puppy, Woofie.
