Des Moines Metro Opera

We’re so excited for The Des Moines Metro Opera’s (DMMO) reopening in Indianola, Iowa. They are a perfect example of an organization smartly using their walls to tell a greater story about their mission.

Des Moines Metro Opera, Make a Scene mural

This project was a unique one, where we were asked to thoughtfully consider how to tell the story of Des Moines Metro Opera that both looks at their mission and history to contribute to their sleek new renovation. First, we worked with Anna Frederick , known for her lettering work, to create an opera themed mural for the new Fred and Charlotte Hubbell Education Room. We wanted to both speak to the fun and dramatic nature of opera and the room's use of staging scenes. We know it will become an "Instagram moment" for years to come.

Additionally, most of the artwork now hanging in the new space was pulled from their archives, featuring costume and stage designs dated back to the 1970s. We partnered with Tandem Brick to frame these historical treasures to create one, coherent collection. There’s a series of gallery walls throughout the office that each tell a unique story. It's amazing to see all the details in the visual renderings of each set, costume and prop display. Over the years, there’s been immense talent in the DMMO staff’s ability to visually communicate their expectations for each performance. Using these images shows how many artists both on stage and behind the scenes, it takes to create each show.

Des Moines Metro Opera, office renovation

Congratulations to DMMO on their recent renovation! We’re in love with the new space - as we’ve heard, we’re not the only ones. We’re so excited for this next chapter in their history and influence. Both Tina and I are looking forward to going to a few shows this summer. Tickets are already limited but if you haven't been to a show yet--you must go! Des Moines is so lucky to have such an incredible opera company here.
