WHAT IS IT?

Youth Mentored Artist Program

The artwork presented here is by a youth artist who completed a six-month mentorship with gallery owner Liz Lidgett, exploring the creative, practical and professional dimensions of life as a working artist. It reflects Liz Lidgett's deep belief that early encouragement and access are foundational to a life in the arts—values instilled in her by the mentors and opportunities she was given as a child. Gallery proceeds from any sale will be donated to the Des Moines Art Center's youth arts education program.

FEATURED YOUTH ARTIST

Teddy Petersik

Teddy, 12, is a self-taught textile artist from Northwest Florida who has been crocheting since age 9. He has sold more than 100 crocheted animals to a local toy store, won multiple first-place ribbons at the county fair and had a self-portrait displayed at the White House in 2024. He enjoys painting, collage, paper folding, sewing, crocheting and other creative pursuits.

Whenever possible, Teddy thrifts his yarn, making many of his pieces sustainably crafted. Every work is handmade by Teddy alone. He pairs his textured fiber art with sleek acrylic frames, creating modern pieces that cast striking shadows and add depth to any gallery wall.

A note from Liz

I have always had a deep belief in mentoring young artists because I was lucky enough to have adults in my life who saw my potential and helped shape who I am today. Growing up, the Des Moines Arts Center gave me something truly invaluable: an arts education and daily access to world-class work that I never could have imagined on my own. Those teachers, those classes and that environment are the reason I fell in love with art. This program is my way of paying that forward.
