Dress Like Your Art 2.0

Aly Shearer • March 7, 2022

I don't know about you, but when I get a new favorite piece I want to show it off to everyone I meet. What better way to show the new piece you are obsessing over than in an amazing outfit from an incredible local shop? I've picked three of my favorite pieces right now and three great East Village shops to make beautiful pairings meant to show off your great taste in art and fashion.

Velvet Coat + Katie Craig

Katie Craig Red, Striped and Blue, 2022 Acrylic on canvas 30 x 40 x 2 in. $2,550.00 or 255/mo with ArtMoney

This duo between Velvet Coat and Katie Craig is preppy and timeless. While curating a look to go along with Katie's work I focused on the feel of the piece rather than the colors or the fact that it is striped. Katie Craig's work has a timeless nautical feel to it that really pairs perfectly with Velvet Coat's overall catalog. The ambiance is a perfect pairing with a Katie. The breezy feel the the silk blouse reflects the nautical feel of the piece, the red clutch being the little pop of surprising color that Katie often puts in her pieces and the dark denim completing the preppiness of the look.

Janes + Kristen Abbott

Kristen Abbott Take Your Busy Heart To The Forest, 2022 mixed media on wood panel 61 x 41 in. $4,500.00 or $450/mo with ArtMoney

Kristen Abbott's brushstrokes are both playful and elegant which couldn't be a more accurate description of Jane's. While it is a children's shop, Jane's does a really good job of making sure the clothes are a good brand and as cute as could be. Both have a calming presence while still being playful and energetic. The eyelet's on the little dress echoing the feel of the leaflike ovals falling along the piece, the knit rattle is a reflection of the actual leaves adhered to the wood board and the little sunnies and bow to have the little pop of green Kristen out into the edges of the piece.

MARNe + Rebecca Stern

Rebecca Stern Future Filter, 2022 Acrylic, ink, spray paint, embroidery and fabric on canvas 46 x 46 in. $3,840.00 or $384/mo with ArtMoney

Rebecca Stern is the queen of the subtle texture and this outfit I picked out from MARNe has that same feel to it. Each piece I selected to be part if this look has a different texture from a different section of this Rebecca Stern piece. The smooth vegan leather bag mimicking the smooth back ground canvas, the textured ivory top mimicking the rippling brush strokes and the pleated trousers mimicking the layering of different fabrics throughout the canvas - every element reflecting Rebeccas beautiful piece.

Shop local this spring and dress like your favorite pieces of art. I hope you have as much fun with these pairings as I did putting them together.
