Origin Story

Allison James

Allison James (b. 1989) is a contemporary abstract painter. James is continually inspired by the messy (but thrilling) human experience. Her work is fueled by personal events and memories, along with conversations overheard from strangers and inside storybooks. James reconfigures these felt emotions into a preferred outcome, translating feeling into her own abstracted storytelling.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

From the artist, Allison

This body of work spans November 2025 to June 2026. The shifts from painting to painting aren't always deliberate stylistic choices—they function more like a diary, recording a pregnancy discovered a few months in (while I was already painting about motherhood) and the cascade of elation, self-doubt, and everything between that followed.

Throughout, warped, wilting, brilliant flowers become stand-ins for transformation—gnarled not from damage, but from the act of taking on a new shape. The winter paintings are dense and deliberate; by spring, the colors lighten and the forms loosen, testing how much can be stripped away while the emotion still holds. That evolution mirrors my growing confidence and excitement about taking this journey again, so soon after my son, in a way we never could have planned.

These paintings are a kind of self-portrait, tracing the instability and wonder of motherhood as it continually reshapes who I am. They ask, "Can I do this?" and, more urgently, "I can't believe I get to do this again."

My hope is simply that the viewer feels something. My story is what gets me to the finished piece, but these paintings aren't only for parents—they're for anyone willing to be transported and find something of themselves within the work.

Please note, purchased pieces will be held for approximately two weeks to display the complete show at the gallery. Tracking information will be communicated once shipped.
