Art Meets Design: Chartreuse & Cornflower Sanctuary
Step into a serene sanctuary where organic textures meet modern touches. Inspired by Kendall Jenner’s AD tour of her mountainous home designed with Heidi Callier, I drew the chartreuse hues of her tiled bath to craft the perfect bedroom color palette.
The Mood: Eclectic, Rooted, Balanced
This bedroom strikes a harmony between grounded tradition and fresh modernity, a serene space where structure and softness meet. Shannon Coppage’s Benevolence, 2025 sets the mood: calm, geometry layered in cornflower blue, chartreuse, creamy white with a warm neutral ground becomes the visual rhythm for the room. Every layer, pattern, texture, color, feels intentional yet effortless, creating a sanctuary that is both classic and contemporary. The result is a space that invites rest and reflection, radiating the calm, confident generosity suggested by its namesake: Benevolence.
A Conversation Between Pattern and Art:
In this bedroom, pattern and art speak the same language, each element echoing the other in tone, texture, and intention. The palette strikes a careful balance between warm and cool: earthy taupes and soft browns soften the energy of bold blues and greens. The geometric rug nods to the modernity of the artwork, providing structure beneath the more delicate florals so both can shine. Every element in the space carries a thread from the art, from the taupe-and-cream striped dresser mirroring Shannon Coppage’s palette, to the coordinated white washed wood nightstands. The result is a room where nothing competes and everything converses, creating a sense of unity, harmony, and serene visual rhythm.
Alongside Shannon’s new work, I would pair pieces that share similar structural qualities and complementary color palettes. For example, Suzy Lindow’s Lachlan, (2025) brings a sense of texture and depth with her expressive brushstrokes and subtle facial motifs, offering a grounding element as the eye moves through the room. Christina Flowers’ Bell Buoy 5, (2024) introduces a touch of gold, adding warmth and a subtle shimmer that echoes the lamp-base metallic accents in the space, enhancing the overall luminosity and cohesion.
Bringing It All Together:
This bedroom is a study in balance, where every element has been thoughtfully layered to create a unified and inviting space. Warm taupes, soft creams, and rich greens anchor the room across textiles, furniture, and finishes, while pops of cornflower blue and chartreuse inject energy and personality. The chartreuse textured wallpaper adds organic warmth along the walls, harmonizing with the naturalistic spirit of the chinoiserie-inspired blues and greens and playing beautifully against the deeper taupes. Patterns, from the geometric rug to the floral bench at the foot of the bed, intersect thoughtfully, allowing modern and traditional motifs to coexist seamlessly while the bench introduces a touch of quiet romance. Lighting from porcelain lamps to the cloud-like glass chandelier softens contrasts and bathes the room in an ethereal glow, tying together color, texture, and pattern. The result is a serene, cohesive space where every element feels purposeful yet effortless, perfectly balancing warmth, structure, and whimsy.
Designer Tips:
Pro Tip #1 - Keep energized greens and blues restful in a bedroom, anchor them with warm neutrals and soft whites. That balance creates contrast without visual noise, giving the eye a place to rest while still letting the color story feel fresh and alive.
Pro Tip #2 - Mix traditional elements with contemporary art and sculptural furniture, focus on shared qualities instead of matching eras. Let classic pieces bring familiarity through silhouette and symmetry (like porcelain lamps or a tailored casegood), then layer in modern forms that echo a similar scale or softness (a rounded headboard, a cloudlike chandelier). The contrast feels intentional when you keep one thread consistent, either a tight palette, repeated curves, or a common material finish, so the room reads as curated, not conflicted.
