Holiday decor inspired by your favorite art

Aly Shearer • October 31, 2022

I absolutely adore Christmas decorating, but this year I am struggling to decide what route I want to go.

Green + Cozy + Kristen Abbott

Firmly Planted, 2022 by artist Kristen Abbott with green and cozy holiday decorations

Kristen Abbott 's work is already so natural and cozy, it was only natural that it was paired with an organic, green holiday theme. Kristen often works outside and uses the world around her not only as inspiration, but also as a medium - she includes little leaves and grasses that fall into the paint as she is working. I really wanted to embody that in the way I chose to design this holiday mood board and make it as earthy and nostalgic as possible. They holidays are a time for getting together with loved ones and reminiscing on the year that is coming to a close and holidays past, I wanted this to feel timeless as Kristen's work feels and cozy as the soft greens make one feel while they are in its presence.

Black + White + Leigh Suggs

Rolling Triangles IV, 2017 Leigh Suggs with black and white holiday decorations

Leigh Suggs ' Rolling Triangles IV is edgy because of its harsh contract in color and also because of the hard edges in the precise cuts she has made in the acrylic is this show stopper of a piece. I chose to really lean into that edgy elegance with this mood board for a black and white holiday. While this can be a very cold way of decorating, it can also be cozy.

Ballet + Gold + Jose Romussi

Gold Dancer, 2019 Jose Romussi with nutcracker and ballet themed holiday decorations

The Nutcracker has been a part of holiday celebrations for well over one hundred years and has been made into countless movies and books. It is a classic which plays into Jose Romussi 's piece Gold Dancerfor a number of reasons. Firstly, The Nutcracker is a ballet and Jose works with vintage images of dancers in his work. Secondly, speaking of vintage, the images of dancers that Jose uses are from decades ago, making both the artwork and the theme something that started long before the idea for this holidays decorating. Lastly, there is a lot of gold used in the ballet and Jose's piece has been embroidered with gold thread, making both the decorations and the piece elegant and rich.

Floral + Sweet + Marcy Vreeland

All I Can Keep Is Now, 2022 Marcy Vreeland surrounded by floral holiday decorations

If you know me, you know I love a good floral display and who pairs better with florals than Marcy Vreeland ? Marcy has a background in floral design and uses that as inspiration in her art and, here, we are using her art as an inspiration for a floral display! Overall, this feels like a very romantic way to decorate for the holidays and could even be a great style of decorating for a proposal or holiday wedding or vow renewal. Also, can you imagine how wonderful that floral tree smells? I'll be dreaming about it for months.

I am so excited to see the way everyone decorates their home to match their art and what pieces they purchases to match their Holiday decorations. Keep in mind that we do have limited commissionopenings with a handful of our artists for Holiday gifting!

Last week, I gave our Gallery Insiders an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at what my walls have been up to. Since releasing my book Art For Everyone, I’ve been prioritizing projects in my own home—using it as both a canvas and a testing ground for ideas I share in the book. One of my favorite recent projects has been completely transforming my kids’ playroom. With the help of an exciting new collaboration with a wallpaper company (stay tuned for the name reveal), the space came to life in a whole new way. As part of the Gallery Insiders exclusive, I hosted a photoshoot right in my home to showcase the new wallpaper designs. While the photographer captured the bigger picture, I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos myself—little glimpses into the DIY projects I’ve been pouring into every corner, tweaking and perfecting until they felt just right. From the dining room to the living room, the kids’ spaces, and even the mudroom, I realized how much inspiration hides in everyday details. And yes, I’ll admit— Pinterest and Facebook Marketplace have been my secret weapons! Today, I’m excited to share a closer look at my home and the inspiration behind it all. In Art For Everyone , you’ll find more photos of my spaces styled with artwork from our gallery, showing how art can live side by side with family life. What started as saved pins and mood boards has turned into real, lived-in rooms—proof that inspiration doesn’t have to stay digital. With a little creativity (and some persistence), those “someday ideas” can become the backdrop of everyday life.
