Elbowgrease is the working moniker for artist Lauren Skunta. A formally trained painter, Skunta’s work has evolved over time to include a variety of mediums. She chose the name Elbowgrease to represent the physical work and craftsmanship that goes into creating her two and three-dimensional pieces, often utilizing found natural pigments. Skunta has returned to her first love of figure painting with the latest series emerging from a season of life defined by urgency and tenderness. As a new mother of two, she experiences time as both precious and fleeting—measured in quiet moments that vanish almost as soon as they arrive. Working quickly has become both necessity and intention. The act of painting must unfold in stolen intervals, allowing gesture to lead. By embracing ephemerality, she hopes to capture the transient energy of this chapter—where creation, like motherhood, is immediate, physical, and profoundly present.
