#LetsAddArt: IKEA

Aly Jensen • January 5, 2021

If you are anything like me, IKEAis like a big toy store. There is endless potential in those walls! But, as usual—their spaces could be so much grander with a little original art. So, #LetsAddArt and see how it enhances their furniture collections!

Vallentuna + Orange Takes Flight, Jen Pack

Jen Pack, Orange Takes Flight, Fabric, Thread and Wood, 33 x 80 x 3.50 in, $9200 ($920/mo)

This bright and fresh space needs to have a little vibrancy, a little movement, and a little excitement. The space already gives off a very spring-y energy, but adding in the radiance of Orange Takes Flight transforms the space from being bright and stark to fresh and exciting; new beginnings are coming and taking flight.

Knotten + Patchwork Farm 7, Karin Olah

Karin Olah, Patchwork Farm 7, Mixed media with textiles on wood, 9 x 12 in, $350

It seems as though the person using this standing desk is a no-nonsense kind of person; they get their work done and are focused, but needs to be reminded to relax a little. This is where Karin comes in—this piece by Karin is absolutely stunning and takes me back to growing up, driving across Iowa, road trips with my family and visiting friends. Patchwork Farm 7 stirs sweet memories and nostalgia that can ease the hard worker's mind and ground them back to who they are.

Myllara + Botanical Arrangement II, Mo Lashbrook

Mo Lashbrook, Botanical Arrangement II, Mixed Media, 24 x 24 x 1 in, $800

This room is both playful and timeless, it has been decorated to grow up with the child dwelling in it, and a fine art piece can really make a room timeless. Mo’s stunning botanicalsadd a mature sense of personality to the space while allowing the childlike playfulness dance in its reflective surface; it will show the reflection of growth allowing itself to be a poetic representation of time passing and standing still all at once.

Savalanas + Andrea Ferrigno

Andrea Ferrigno, Sharing Space, Acrylic gouache on canvas panel, 16 x 16 in, $1200 ($120/mo) / La Canicule, Oil on linen, 24 x 19.50 in, $1600 ($160/mo)

As many of us are doing these days, the person IKEA built this room for works from home and needs to keep their space as work-focused as possible, which can be hard in the home. I would actually not like to add just one piece to this space, but two: Sharing Space and La Canicule . Both pieces include a beautiful, soothing, shade of green that is a reflection of life and growth and movement which is exactly what we need when feeling cooped up inside for months on end. A depiction of life still moving on, even when it seems to be standing still.

Sundvick + Live the Dream #2, Kristi Kohut

Kristi Kohut, Live the Dream #2, Mixed Media, 27 x 60 x 7 in, $2950 ($295/mo)

IKEA's designers put stars all over the walls and a cloud light next to the changing table giving the space a dreamy, bright, feel. Live the Dream #2 is a beautiful, soft, piece there to remind the parent, as well as the child, to express themselves and dream bigger than imaginable.

Omtankasam + Throwback, Shannon Coppage

Shannon Coppage, Throwback, Acrylic on linen, 8 x 10 in, $295

Clean and contemporary, Shannon Coppage’s artwork perfectly reflects IKEA’s aesthetic. When thinking about a space, it’s fun to brainstorm additional locations for original art besides hanging on the wall. Throwback , placed in a thick, white frame, stands on its own and makes a beautiful side-table addition.
