Sarah White is an abstract painter based in Kansas City. With a background in design, styling, and art direction, her work lives between structure and spontaneity, exploring the constant tension between control and letting go through layered washes, raw textures, and intuitive mark-making.
Her process is part planned, part instinct. She experiments, gets lost, makes mistakes, and then follows whatever starts to happen. Most of the time, the shift becomes the work. Each piece builds in real time, with color, surface, and gesture figuring themselves out as they go. She works with thinned pigments, translucent layers, and a lot of restraint, then breaks that restraint with moments of bold color or pattern to create tension.
She moves across different styles, but the work tends to land in the same place. It’s less about depicting something and more about capturing a feeling. She thinks of each piece as a record of a moment—an emotional shift, something that’s hard to pin down but easy to recognize. Even as things change visually, there’s a rhythm that carries through. This practice has become a constant for her, something she returns to and something that continues to open up the more she stays in it.
