It’s been a joy working with the Des Moines Public Schools. As the invited artist to partner with Weeks Middle School on their collaborative mural, I really enjoyed getting to know the art teacher, Jessica Iyan Wenck, and the students.

Before the actual execution of the mural, I visited with each art class period and brainstormed with the students on what the idea of “unity within diversity” looks like as a visual. During this time, I loved seeing the students express themselves through discussion and their personal sketchbooks.

The final design is a result of student-inspired ideas and overall facilitation by myself and the art teacher, Jessica. To the students, “unity within diversity” meant a unified compilation of skin colors, hobbies, flags, likes and interests, their school, facial features and an inspirational quote. The whole design was painted on six individual metal panels - 6 foot tall each. The panels are a great idea, because the Weeks staff didn't want the mural to be completely permanent. The mounted panels allow the staff to remove and/or change the mural at any time.

The students are so proud of the final outcome. The idea of a large, collaborative mural has been on Jessica’s mind for over a year now! After several days of planning and painting, the mural is now mounted and on display for the community to see. It really is beautiful - even more so knowing it’s the local students' creation.

As always, this project couldn’t have been successfully done without the help of supporters. A handful of Des Moines organizations contributed their resources. Sherwin Williams donated the paint, C2F Inc. donated paintbrushes and Veridian Credit Uniondonated to supplies and staff time. This mural wouldn’t have happened without the additional support. I’m so encouraged and inspired by the community’s generosity.

I hope this initiative to celebrate diversity in a creative way inspires surrounding districts. The students couldn’t wait for their families to see it on the daily. We love painting the cityof Des Moines and jump at any opportunity to help make it happen. Next time you’re on the south side, take a drive by Weeks Middle School and see the newly mounted mural for yourself!
