The color blue

Liz Lidgett • October 20, 2020

This is the first post in a series where I take a deep dive into a specific color. Blue was a natural place to start for me. It’s often the foundation of rooms that I design, in my own home and for clients as it’s a calming, grounding color. The color blue is often associated with natural elements like the sky and the ocean and studies show that the color blue actually has an effect on the metabolism and creates a chemical calming effect. Isn’t it amazing that color can do that?

Blue also symbolizes truth, loyalty, wisdom and confidence. Once when I was in college a friend had just come back from Italy and had seen the Sistine Chapel. I said, “Wasn’t it incredible?! It brought tears to my eyes when I saw it.” My friend shrugged and said “the sky was a tight blue.” Well, Michelangelo, even you can’t win them all but at least your “tight” blue stuck in his mind. Blue has a way of doing that. So here’s a few of my favorite pieces in the gallery right now that have blue as the star.
